Frequently Asked Questions

Deep winter (23°F) vs shoulder season (45°F) — do I need different gear?

Yes, and it matters. EISENHERZ (Assos) + Gore Infinium (Castelli Gabba R) are rated for deep winter — below 40°F. Equipe R (Assos), Rapha Pro Team Winter, Velocio LUXE are rated 40-55°F. Wearing deep-winter gear at 55°F = soaked in sweat. Wearing shoulder-season at 28°F = hypothermia risk. Own one set of each if you ride year-round.

Gabba vs rain jacket — when to wear what?

Gabba R (Castelli): short-to-medium rides in cold-wet, high-effort conditions. Trades some waterproof rating for massive breathability. Full rain shells (Rapha Pro Team GORE-TEX, Showers Pass Refuge): hours-long downpours, low-effort recovery rides, commuting. If you sweat a lot and ride hard: Gabba. If you want to stay completely dry: rain shell.

Why does winter bib fit matter so much?

Because cold + loose = lots of wind infiltration through fabric gaps. Race-fit winter bibs (Assos EISENHERZ, Rapha Pro Team) seal against skin and prevent cold-air pumping as you pedal. Loose-fit commuter tights let cold air in with every pedal stroke. The slim race cut is the SINGLE biggest factor for staying warm in the cold.

Shoe covers: thermal vs waterproof?

Thermal shoe covers (PEARL iZUMi AmFib) = fleece-lined, rated 25°F, not waterproof. Waterproof shoe covers (PEARL iZUMi Pro Rain, Castelli Estremo) = water-sealed, less insulated. For cold-dry: AmFib. For wet-cold (worst case): Castelli Estremo neoprene. Own both or buy waterproof first — you can layer socks under waterproof, can't add waterproof to thermal.

What about cycling-specific winter gloves?

Next category to shop for. For sub-freezing: 45NRTH Mira or Assos Ultraz Winter Gloves ($170-200). For 40-55°F: Rapha Deep Winter Gloves ($130) or Castelli Espresso Padded ($75). For rain: Sealskinz Extreme Cold Weather ($80). Cheap winter gloves cost you fingers after 30 minutes.

Can I layer summer cycling gear instead of buying winter?

Sort of, down to about 55°F. Summer bibs + leg warmers + summer jersey + windproof shell = equivalent to 50-55°F shoulder-season kit for $0 extra. Below 50°F, dedicated winter bibs and jacket are noticeably warmer AND more comfortable because they're cut for tight layering.
