These are not alternatives. Own a floor pump for home, because accurate pressure before every ride is the single cheapest thing you can do for comfort, grip and puncture resistance. Carry a CO2 inflator for punctures, because it fills a tyre in seconds at the roadside. Note that CO2 diffuses through tyre casings faster than air, so a CO2-filled tyre will be soft by the next day.
Tyre pressure is one of the few free performance and comfort variables on a bike, and most people ride under-inflated because they check by squeezing. A gauge on a floor pump removes the guesswork, and correct pressure meaningfully reduces pinch flats and improves both grip and rolling resistance.
