Wahoo KICKR CORE 2 review

It arrives with the Zwift Cog fitted, which removes the job that puts people off direct drive trainers.

The verdict: The CORE 2 solves the practical barrier to direct drive training: it ships with the Zwift Cog so you do not have to buy a cassette, match it to your drivetrain or find a chain whip. Buy it as a first direct drive trainer, or as the sensible one if you are not racing. Skip it if you sprint above its resistance ceiling or want the heavier flywheel, which is what the V6 adds.

What it does well

Where it falls short

What owners report

Published owner reports describe the Zwift Cog as the feature that made them buy it, particularly among riders who had put off direct drive because of the cassette. WiFi stability draws consistent praise.

The recurring criticism is virtual shifting, which divides opinion: some riders prefer it and never go back, others fit a normal cassette within weeks. That both options exist is the point, and it is worth knowing that switching is possible.

Alternatives worth considering

Heavier Flywheel
Wahoo KICKR V6 Smart Indoor Trainer
~$849

Three hundred dollars more for a heavier flywheel, over 2,200 watts of resistance and AXIS feet for a little lateral movement. Worth it for racers and heavy riders and not for most people.

The Other Way to Spend It
Favero Assioma Duo Power Meter Pedal
~$521

Almost the same money for a power meter that works on every ride you do. If you ride outdoors more than indoors, this is the better first purchase and a cheap wheel on trainer covers the winter.

Common questions

What is the Zwift Cog?

A single sprocket that replaces the cassette, so any bike from 8 to 12 speed mounts on the trainer without matching parts. You change gear virtually using the Click controller on the bars rather than through your own drivetrain. It removes both the cassette purchase and the fitting job.

Is virtual shifting better?

It divides opinion honestly. It removes chain noise and cross chaining, and it means one trainer fits every bike in the house. Some riders find it disconnected from real riding and fit a conventional cassette instead, which the trainer supports. Try it before deciding.

CORE 2 or KICKR V6?

The V6 adds a heavier flywheel, more resistance and AXIS feet for three hundred dollars. The CORE 2 has the same WiFi and includes the Cog. Unless you are a heavy sprinter or a racer chasing the last percent of ride feel, the CORE 2 is the better value.

Do I need Zwift to use it?

No. It works with any app that speaks standard trainer protocols, including TrainerRoad, Rouvy and Wahoo's own. The Cog and Click are Zwift branded and are not Zwift exclusive.

Will it fit my bike?

With the Zwift Cog, any 8 to 12 speed bike with a compatible axle standard. Check the axle and hub spacing against Wahoo's compatibility list, particularly for thru axle bikes, since adapters are sometimes needed.
